Melbourne Airport Transfers: What to Expect at Tullamarine and Avalon

You have cleared customs, collected your bags, and you are standing in the arrivals hall at Tullamarine with a trolley and a phone on three percent. This is the part of the trip nobody plans for, and it is the part that sets the tone for everything that follows.

Here is how getting picked up at Melbourne Airport actually works — including a change to the pick-up zones that takes effect in October.

Something is changing on 6 October

From 6 October, Melbourne Airport is changing the way pick-up and drop-off works for Terminals 1, 2 and 3. A new T123 Transport Hub opens, with free and expanded pick-up and drop-off zones and a new dedicated exit from the Tullamarine Freeway. It works in a similar way to the existing T4 Transport Hub that Jetstar and Rex passengers already use, but on a larger scale.

If a friend or family member is collecting you in the weeks after that date, expect the route and the signage to be unfamiliar. Follow the signs to the T123 Transport Hub rather than the path you remember.

If you are being collected by a chauffeur, this is one less thing to think about. Your driver is already across the change, and with a private transfer you are met inside the terminal rather than trying to find a car that is circling outside.

Which terminal are you landing at?

Melbourne Airport has four terminals, and knowing yours saves confusion when you are arranging a pick-up:

  • T1 — Qantas domestic
  • T2 — International
  • T3 — Virgin Australia domestic
  • T4 — Jetstar, Rex and Link Airways domestic

Give your flight number when you book and the terminal takes care of itself. Flight numbers are unambiguous; “the 8pm from Sydney” is not.

What a private transfer actually includes

A private airport transfer is not a taxi you booked early. The difference is in what happens before you land.

Your flight is tracked in real time. If you land forty minutes early, or you sit on the tarmac for an hour, the pick-up time moves with the aircraft. You do not need to message anyone from the air bridge.

You are met inside the arrivals hall. Your chauffeur waits with a name board and helps with your bags to the car. You are not looking for a numberplate in a pick-up lane in the rain.

Waiting time is built in. The time it takes to clear customs, wait at the carousel and find your second suitcase is accounted for. There is no meter running while you queue at biosecurity.

The vehicle is yours alone. No other passengers, no other stops, no shared shuttle loop around four hotels before yours.

Luggage space in the Mercedes-Benz V-Class

Luggage is the part people underestimate

Seven seats does not mean seven suitcases. A vehicle that seats a family comfortably may not swallow the luggage that family is travelling with, and this is the single most common cause of a stressful kerbside moment.

When requesting a quote, say how many people are travelling and roughly what they are carrying — suitcases, cabin bags, prams, sports gear. The vehicle is matched to both. Where the honest answer is that one car will not do it, a second vehicle is the better solution and is quoted that way from the start.

Oversized items are not a problem, but they do need a mention: prams, golf bags, skis and surfboards can all be carried when the right vehicle is assigned in advance.

Travelling with children

Baby capsules, child seats and boosters are supplied free of charge on request. The important part is the timing: tell us how many children are travelling and their ages when you book, so the seats are fitted before pick-up rather than at the kerb while you are holding a toddler and a passport wallet.

Seats are fitted in advance and included in the quoted price.

Avalon Airport

Not every flight lands at Tullamarine. Avalon sits west of the city toward Geelong, and it is a meaningfully different drive — particularly if your final destination is the eastern suburbs or the Mornington Peninsula. Transfers to and from Avalon work exactly the same way: flight tracking, meet and greet, and a fixed price quoted before you travel.

How the price works

Airport transfers are quoted as a single fixed price for the vehicle, confirmed in writing before you book. Tolls and GST are inside that price. There is no surge pricing and no per-kilometre surcharge — a 6am Monday and a 2am Sunday in the middle of the Grand Prix are quoted the same way.

Payment in full confirms the booking. Until it is paid, the vehicle is not held — worth knowing in late December and during major events, when demand for people movers is genuinely tight.

Cancelling more than 24 hours before pick-up is free. Within 24 hours, half the fare is charged.

Booking in one message

To get a quote back quickly, send:

  1. Flight number and arrival date
  2. Drop-off address (or pick-up address, if you are heading to the airport)
  3. Number of passengers
  4. Roughly what luggage you have
  5. Children travelling, and their ages

That is enough to quote a vehicle and a price. You can send it through the quote form, by email, or on WhatsApp — whichever is easiest at the time.

Full details on vehicles, payment and cancellations are on the booking information page, and the airport transfers page covers the service itself.
