“Private day tour” gets used loosely enough that it is worth saying what it actually means, because the difference from a coach tour is not a matter of degree.
On a coach tour you join a fixed route with forty strangers, and the schedule is built around the slowest person at every stop. On a private tour the vehicle carries your group and nobody else, the day starts at your door, and the itinerary bends to the people in the car.
Here is how the day actually runs.
The shape of the day
A private day tour normally runs 10 to 12 hours, door to door. That is not a coincidence — it is what the good destinations require once you account for the drive.
The Great Ocean Road is the clearest example. The Twelve Apostles are roughly three hours from Melbourne each way on the coastal route, and the drive is the attraction, not the commute. Compress that into six hours and you get a bus window and a photograph. Give it a full day and you get Bells Beach, Lorne, the Otways and enough time at the Apostles to wait for the light.
The Yarra Valley is closer, which changes the day rather than shortening it — less driving, more cellar doors.

Who decides where you go
You do. The starting point is usually one of the established routes, and there are ten of them:
Yarra Valley · Great Ocean Road · Phillip Island · Mornington Peninsula · Dandenong Ranges · Daylesford · Ballarat · Bendigo · The Grampians · Melbourne after dark
But the route is a starting point, not a timetable. Tell us the ages of the group and how far anyone wants to walk, and the day is set to that. A day with two grandparents and a five-year-old is a different Dandenongs to a day with four adults who want to do the full Sherbrooke Forest walk — same destination, different shape.
How it is priced
Day tours are quoted per day, not per hour. One fixed, all-inclusive price for the vehicle, confirmed in writing before you book, with tolls and GST included. No surge pricing, no per-kilometre surcharge.
That structure matters more than it sounds. Per-hour pricing quietly puts you and the driver on opposite sides of every decision — every extra twenty minutes at a lookout costs you money. Per-day pricing takes the clock out of the conversation.
If the day genuinely runs past the agreed length, the extra time is charged at the vehicle’s hourly rate, which is confirmed in writing with your quote. No surprises, but also no pressure to be back early.
Payment in full confirms the booking. Cancelling more than 24 hours ahead is free; within 24 hours, half the fare is charged.
What happens if the weather turns
Tours run in all weather. Melbourne’s reputation is deserved and a grey forecast is not a reason to cancel — the Otways in rain are arguably better than the Otways in sun, and the Apostles in heavy cloud are genuinely dramatic.
The exception is an official closure. If a road or a site is closed on the day and the tour cannot go ahead, it is rescheduled at no cost.

Travelling with children
This is where private tours separate from every other option.
Baby capsules, child seats and boosters are supplied free of charge and fitted in advance — tell us the number of children and their ages when you book, so the seats are in the car before pick-up rather than being wrestled in at the kerb.
More importantly, the day can be built for them. Stopping when a toddler needs to stop, skipping the long walk, adding the wildlife park that was not on the plan — none of that is possible on a coach, and all of it is the difference between a family day out and an endurance event.
Luggage and oversized items
Most day tours are light on luggage, but it still shapes the vehicle choice — particularly if you are being collected from the airport on the way. Prams, golf bags, skis and surfboards can all be carried when the right vehicle is assigned from the start, so mention them at booking.
Booking the day
Send the date, the number of passengers, the ages of anyone travelling with children, the pick-up address, and where you would like to go. If you are not sure which route suits, say what the group enjoys and we will suggest one.
The tours page has all ten routes, and the booking information page covers payment, cancellations, child seats and luggage in full.
